THIS CAR
  • First registered on the 9th May 1961, this Porsche 356 B 1600 Super was delivered new to the UK in RHD configuration.
  • Being a desirable ‘Super’, the car feels noticeably quicker and more responsive than a ‘Normal’ 1600, with its engine producing 75bhp (over the Normal’s 60bhp).
  • What’s more, this particular car has been prepared and maintained for historic road rallying, and features two spotlights on the bonnet, a discreet roll cage and also a Brantz rally timer.
    • Having said this, if the next owner wished to convert the car back to standard specification, it wouldn’t take much work at all.
  • The car has competed in a number of prestigious historic rally events, including:
    • 1999 Monte Carlo Rally Historique
    • 2010 Scottish Tour
    • 1000ml Tour with Classic Car Tours
    • 2011 Tour with Special Tests
    • HRCR
  • A such, the history file reads inline with a car that’s been properly looked after over the years. The non-original but period correct engine was fully rebuilt by Barry Curtis in 1999, with the rest of the car receiving full attention from Gantspeed and Roger Bray in the years since.
  • The car is supplied with it’s original ‘Green Logbook’, continuation book, drivers manual as well as the original profile publication brochure.
  • If you look carefully at the photographs below, you’ll notice a black mark on the roof – just one of this car’s many interesting features.
  • That mark is, in fact, the signature of non other than Mr Sebastian Lobe, 8-time World Rally Champion. When visiting a previous owner’s garage while ‘recceing’ for the Wales Rally in 2010, Lobe took a shining to the car and very kindly signed its roof! The owner subsequently had the signature professionally lacquered to ensure its survival.
  • Having had 10 keepers over the course of its 62 year life, including RAF Flight Lieutenant Malcolm Jolyon Maclaine, as well as Robert McIntyre of Sorn Castle (a very well regarded family of collectors in their own right), the current owner has continued to maintain the car and drive it regularly within and around his local area.
What we think
  • What’s our verdict? Well, having just sailed through its MOT with zero advisories first time, it’s certainly a well sorted car.
  • It drives very well, holds temperature bang on, and gets a smile everywhere you go!
  • Whether you’re an historic rally enthusiast, an air-cooled fanatic, or simply an aspiring classic car lover, this car really is a fantastic option.
