THE MODEL
  • The Porsche 993 was introduced as the successor to the Porsche 964, and marked the last of the air cooled 911’s, with production running from 1994 until 1998.
  • The 993’s beautifully sculpted body was the vision of Yorkshire born designer, Tony Hatter, who, while remaining sympathetic to the 911’s iconic silhouette, introduced the distinctive flared wheel arches, tear drop wing mirrors, smoother lines through the bumpers and a larger retractable spoiler.
  • Porsche themselves claimed that the 993 was a completely new car from the ground up, sharing just 20% of the parts from the previous model.
  • A headline feature was the new light-alloy subframe with coil and wishbone suspension linked to a Weissach axle, which resulted in a drastic improvement in the car’s handling characteristics.
  • The 993 also benefitted from Porsche’s innovative new VarioRam system, which increased noise at the top of the rev range and produced an incredible 15% power increase over the previous car.
  • The 993 Turbo, however, was a different beast altogether…
  • Introduced in 1995, the Turbo featured the same 3.6L flat six as the standard 993, but twin turbo chargers, air-to-air intercoolers, electronic ignition management and re-designed cylinder heads, resulted in an enormous power gain from 281bhp to 402bhp.
  • A top speed of 180mph and a 0-60mph time of 4.5s, the 993 Turbo was one of the fastest production cars of its time.
