THE MODEL
  • The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was first produced in Italy with production running from 1954 – 1965.
  • Through out its production life, the car took on many forms. These included a 2+2 coupé, four-door saloon, estate (Incredibly rare), spider, Sprint, and Sprint Speciale.
  • Owing it’s elegant lines and timeless style to Bertone, Pininfarina & Zagato (On a much smaller amount of cars), the whole line was a huge success for the brand worldwide.
  • The autumn of 1961 saw the light re-styling of the Giulietta. This would be the final style that the car would be ‘ran out’ as. It’s successor, the Giulia, would be ran in production along side until the final Giulietta finished production in 1965.
THIS CAR
  • The car is an original Giulietta Spider Veloce, chassis number AR169000.
  • Built in Italy during 1961, and first registered on the 21st of March 1961, this is an ‘Interim’ car between MK1 and MK2.
  • Being an interim car it has a long wheel base, fixed hood mountings, the rear of the hood frame is not visible and is also accompanied by different boot hinges too.
  • The car has an extremely comprehensive history file which spans throughout its life. This includes data from when it was raced within the Targa Florio (1990) & Scuderia del Portello (2009) to name but a few.
  • Current ownership started with the purchase by Hero ERA from Italy in 2011. Later that year the car arrived in the UK and was taken to Rally Preparation Services to start its journey back to being a historic rally car. From here onward until 2018, the Alfa was adapted and maintained whilst competing in historic rally’s as part of Hero’s arrive and drive fleet that included:
    • Le Jog – 2012
    • Hero Challenge – 2012 (Mullen & Hacking)
    • Summer Trial – 2012 (De Vargas Machuca & Jenny)
    • Scottish Malts – 2012 ( De Vargas Machuca & Wallace)
    • Le Jog – 2013 (Kirtley & Jones)
    • Hero Challenge – 2013 (Kirtley & Jones)
    • Rally of the Tests – 2015 (Maracatilij & Brooks) (FIA winner of this year)
    • Classic Marathon – 2015 (Whyte & Powley)
    • Icelandic Saga – 2015 (De Vargas Machuca & Mezger)
    • Rally of the Tests – 2016 (Maracattilij & Brooks)
    • Rally of the Tests – 2017 (Ulm & Souek)
    • Summer Trial – 2018 (Liedtke & Liedtke)
  • After the summer of 2018, AR169000 was put in with Classic Performance Engineering (an outfit that prepare for multiple Goodwood events, and also many historic race series across the UK and Europe) for a full engine strip and rebuild.
  • Starting in 2018 and finishing in the early part of 2022, AR169000 was subjected to an entire “Nut & Bolt” restoration by that of DTR European Sports Cars. DTR have restored many Concours winning cars throughout their rich history, including Pebble Beach. Over this restoration period invoices are present in excess of £150K GBP.
  • After the car was returned from its extensive restoration, it took part in the Hero Novice Trial as part of a “shake down” to test for any imperfections. Once more this exercise was carried out in the recent ACE in Motion Tour 2022 (a small sub-100-mile tour for a charity raising awareness of Spinal Muscular Atrophy).
  • Since AR169000 had completed its “shake down” testing, it has been subjected to a full paint correction and ceramic coating treatment courtesy of Auto Wax Works to ensure the cars paintwork really was in line with the standard of the restoration. The ceramic coating was decided upon so that if the next custodian should wish to compete with the car, that they could do so safe in the knowing that this beautiful rich paintwork would be completely protected through the toughest of conditions.
